Volunteer News

Would you like to lead a tour? Welcome a guest?
The Ribault Club was built in 1928 and is a monument of the resort era on Fort George Island. It has been placed ont he National Register of Historic Places by the US Dept. of Interior and listed as a Historic Landmark by the City of Jacksonville. The building, expected to open this autumn, will be operated in partnership by the Florida Park Service, National Park Service, and a private concession.

The historic building will contain a public exhibit area, a bookstore, and facilities for group events such as conferences and weddings. The facility will be open to the public Wednesdays to Sundays 9-5. Guided tours will be offered on weekends.

We are looking for volunteers with outgoing personalities, an interest in history, cultural resources or interpretation and an interest in working with the public. Volunteer docents will act as greeters and also provide guided tours through the facility and interpretive exhibits on the weekends.
If you are interested in becoming a Ribault Club volunteer, contact Kathleen Kelso, Park Ranger and Volunteer Coordinator at (904) 251-2320 to arrange to attend the next information session.

Below is a letter from one of the Talbot Islands volunteers. She and her husband have volunteered at a number of FL State Parks but like Talbot the best. Read what she has to say.....

So why do we return to LTISP? Is it for the moderate winter climate, accommodation close to the long and empty beach, the sound of the surf, or the friendly co-volunteers? All that and more. Yes there is more. The major reason for us to spend 4 months at this particular Florida State Park is the Staff. From Manager Bob Joseph to Rookie Ranger Rick Argo we get nothing but smiles of welcome, Help and cooperation when given new work projects.

We are most impressed by the acceptance of all the Rangers and O.P.S. workers, we have never felt any resentment to our presence, we just feel we become new members of the team. Teamwork and equality are central in the running of this park. It is most apparent at the daily 7:30am meeting where job allocations are given out, everyone present has opportunity to contribute ideas and expertise. Routines and duties are shared, no one seems to get special treatment over others.

Of course there has to be an occasional disgruntled employee but we never know as everyone on staff here shows mature and professional behaviour. We have heard from campers who have been at other parks that "Volunteers" can be taken advantage of and used as cheap labour. We do not feel that happens at LTISP. Our view is that the Volunteer Co-ordinator definitely reads our resumes and matches projects with our interest and skills.

Working twenty hours per week per couple for beach front parking and full services is not a lot to ask plus it gives us a wonderful opportunity to get to know our Southern neighbours. Being included in the Team and being treated as equals is why we like to come back here. Oh I forgot the shore birds are fun to watch. ---- Andrea & Bob

The Talbot Islands State Park CSO hosted a Holiday low country boil in December. Staff and volunteers from Talbot Islands & Ft Clinch State Parks as well as Timucuan Preserve enjoyed great food and a visit from Santa. See photos of the event
